Editors note: Paul smith had some Questions about the races on March 10 and 11. Lee Vonderhey’s answer gives pretty complete details about the up coming races. Here’s the question, and Lee’s a very complete answer.

From Paul Smith:

I’m Paul Smith, board member for the PVMAC club, and have been setting up a pylon practice course at our Norton field at the San Berdoo airport. I have a copy of the announcement for the race on Mar 10 and 11. Can you direct me to a source for the rules referenced, i.e. the W/424 / APRA rules. Is this a 2 or 3 pylon course. I have the EF-1 rules and I’m familiar with the NMPRA website.

Lee Vonderhey’s response:

Hi there Paul,

The airframe rules for APRA / AMA 424 are what we are using except for that we are allowing composite airframes to be used. The series that we are creating or re-creating in California uses the same 3 pole course that California used 30 years ago. This is a 400′ long 3 pole coures. ( which is the old QM .15 short course).

For the clubs that would like to host 2 pole racing the length of the course shall be 455′ from pole to pole. We will be using the same basic procedure that is spell out in the AMA rule book.

The engine of choice is the Thunder Tiger .40 Pro. This is the engine that everyone uses in 424 or APRA. There are no specific rules for the events that we are running due to the fact that when we use to run this event Q-500 was not a National event, it was always a local event. So just to be clear the engine shall be a TT .40 Pro.

The airframe shall comply with the rules spelled out in the AMA rule book. The race procedure that we are going to use does not require an expensive computer driven system like the National type races are using. Basically the cuts are added up at the end of each heat and penalties are enforced at that point. One cut = one point, Two cuts = a Zero.

By the way 30 years ago when we had 50 entries at each one of these contests a pre-built airframe costs around 200.00 from Lyle Larson, An engine from Clarence Lee was 155.00 which included a Magic Muffler and servos were about 35.00 ea. Today a Great Planes Q-500 Viper is 130.00, TT .40 is about 80.00 and Hitec servos are 18.00 ea. The planes with the TT .40 will go the same speeds we went with the K&B 6.5s 30 years ago for around 20 to 25% less money than we use to spend 30 years ago.

All of this should add up to a lot of fun for less dollars which means more entries. I really appreciate your interest and I will help your club with whatever it takes to promote Pylon Racing in SO. Cal. again.

Thanks, Lee - (818) 554-3517

Every year Members of the San Gabriel Valley Radio Control Board of Directors are invited to participate in a meeting with the management of the Whittier Narrows Park. The sole purpose of this meeting is to discuss changes to park policies and rule changes. This includes the park entry fees and operating rules for our flying site. This is also a good time for us to ask for things we would like to see changed or updated at our flying site. Or get the OK for a large project that we are preparing to do such as runway repairs. Safety is always a big concern and the park management leans on us pretty hard to keep our flying as safe as possible. That means flying out of the designated areas and taxing in the pits is a BIG concern for us. The safer we are the happier the park personnel are.

Its been a great year of model aircraft flying. A lot of changes have occurred this year. The rapid expansion of electric powered aircraft has become dominate. The little bind and fly aircraft is really popular. I believe that when the batteries become more refined and less dangerous you will see an even larger growth in electric flight. Gasoline powered aircraft have also become popular due to the lower cost of gasoline over methanol based fuels. But as for now the gasoline engines are reserved for larger aircraft usually starting in the 1.20 size. Even though the price of a gallon of methanol based fuel is relatively expensive, it still has its place in the hobby. The San Gabriel Valley Radio Control League wishes you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. If you want to make a New Years resolution, how about joining the SGVRCL if your not already a member.
